Tariffs, Inflation, and Foodservice: Why Financing Can Be Your Best Defense

Cash and the word 'Tariffs' symbolizing foodservice equipment price increases

The foodservice industry is no stranger to tight margins. But in 2025, operators are feeling the pinch more than ever. Rising food costs, persistent supply chain volatility, and the reintroduction of tariffs on imports from China and other countries are adding significant pressure, especially when it comes to equipment and essentials. While some tariffs have been temporarily paused as part of a 90-day reprieve, that pause ends on July 9. As that deadline approaches, many in the industry are bracing for another round of price increases.

What’s Causing Foodservice Equipment Price Increases?

There’s no single culprit, but a few key factors are driving costs up:

Tariffs on Chinese Imports: U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports, including kitchen equipment and materials, are active under Section 301, though many products are temporarily excluded through August 31, 2025. Additional ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs announced in April are currently paused, but that pause ends soon. Steel, aluminum, car, and parts tariffs remain at elevated rates. Prices are already elevated, and more increases could kick in soon, so it may be a smart time to place orders and lock in current pricing.

Global Shipping Instability: Ongoing conflict in the Red Sea, combined with congestion at U.S. ports and rising freight costs, is leading to shipping delays and increasing landed equipment costs.

Manufacturer Price Adjustments: With their own costs rising, many manufacturers have announced mid-year price increases on equipment, many of which are taking effect in July.

Inflation and Labor Costs: Wages and input costs continue to climb, causing the cost of goods to rise.

Why This Matters for Equipment Buyers

For operators, distributors, and dealers, this means the cost of doing business is going up fast, and unpredictably. Delaying purchases can result in higher prices, longer lead times, and tighter margins.

Let’s say you’ve been holding off on that fryer, walk-in, or hood system upgrade. If you wait six months, you might face:

  • A higher purchase price due to price increases
  • Slower delivery from backlogged ports or suppliers
  • A hit to productivity from aging or broken-down equipment

How Financing Helps You Get Ahead of Cost Increases

At FS Foodservice Solutions, we work with dealers and operators every day to help them overcome exactly these challenges!

Here’s how financing can help hedge against uncertainty:

1. Lock in Pricing Now
When you finance equipment today, you’re buying at current prices, not future, inflated ones. That means you get ahead of price hikes and supply disruptions.

2. Predictable Monthly Payments
Financing gives you a fixed monthly cost, making budgeting easier in an otherwise volatile environment. No surprises. No sticker shock.

3. Keep your Capital Working
Rather than draining cash reserves, financing allows you to preserve working capital for payroll, food costs, or expansion. You stay agile and ready for whatever’s next.

4. Stay Competitive
Upgraded equipment means greater efficiency, consistency, and labor savings, at a time when every bit of margin counts.

5. Upgrade from “Good Enough” to What You Actually Need
Tight budgets often force operators to choose lower-tier equipment, even if it’s not the best long-term fit. Financing gives you the flexibility to invest in equipment that’s built to last and tailored to your volume, menu, and kitchen layout. Instead of settling for a basic economy model, you can get the right tool for the job without the upfront financial strain.

Real Talk: Cost Creep Isn’t Slowing Down

Some operators hope things will “go back to normal” but many analysts don’t expect significant easing of increases in the near term, and some manufacturers are already scheduling their next round of increases.

That’s why we’re encouraging our customers: if you know you’ll need new equipment this year, consider financing it now. You can avoid delays, secure pricing, and spread costs in a way that supports your bottom line.

Bottom Line

The foodservice landscape is shifting fast, but financing gives operators a way to take control, move quickly, and protect their cash while staying ahead of price increases. If you’ve been thinking about upgrading or expanding, now may be the best time to do it.
