Shining Star Series: Scott Hall, Innovative Foodservice Group

At FS Foodservice Solutions, we believe great partnerships deserve the spotlight. Our Shining Star series highlights standout DSRs who go above and beyond to support operators, drive growth, and bring real value to every interaction, including by offering equipment financing as part of their toolkit. These stories showcase the energy, creativity, and hustle that make our partners shine, and we’re proud to celebrate them here!

One thing became pretty clear while talking with Scott Hall, Vice President of Sales at Innovative Foodservice Group; he doesn’t see his job as just selling equipment.

In fact, he spent most of our conversation talking about the opposite. Helping customers avoid buying the wrong equipment, helping his team learn from one another, and making sure people have what they actually need to be successful.

After more than 20 years as an Executive Chef with Westin Hotels, Scott understands firsthand what it’s like to be on the operator’s side of the conversation. He knows the pressure of making purchasing decisions, stretching budgets, and getting the most out of every piece of equipment, which is exactly what eventually led him to the dealer side of the industry.

About ten years ago, when chefs making that transition were still relatively uncommon, Scott joined Louis Wohl & Sons. He brought something many salespeople couldn’t, the perspective of someone who had actually lived the day-to-day challenges his customers were facing. When IFG acquired Louis Wohl about seven years ago, Scott continued to grow with the company and today serves as Vice President of Sales.

That experience continues to shape every conversation he has.

Rather than simply quoting what a customer asks for, Scott believes his responsibility is to understand what they’re trying to accomplish. Sometimes the equipment they think they need isn’t actually the best fit. Other times, investing a little more upfront creates a much better return over the life of the equipment.

“I don’t look to maximize profits,” he told me. “I want to maximize the ability of what the customer can do.”

That single sentence probably sums up his entire approach.

For Scott, it’s never been about selling the most equipment. It’s about giving operators the knowledge they need to make good decisions and setting them up for long-term success.

That same philosophy carries into how he leads his team.

While he was honored to be named DSR of the Year in 2023, he was quick to point out that awards don’t belong to one person.

“You can’t ever forget the people who helped you along the way,” he said. “They share in your success and your wins.”

It’s a mindset he’s worked hard to build within the sales team at IFG. Collaboration isn’t just encouraged, it’s expected. Everyone is looking out for one another, catching details someone else might miss, and working toward the same goal. Around the office, there’s a simple phrase that sums it up perfectly.

“Go team.”

Scott believes that’s what makes a great organization. Every project takes people supporting one another, communicating well, and being honest enough to put the customer’s needs ahead of making a quick sale.

That customer-first approach is also what keeps him excited about the industry after all these years.

No two days look the same. One project might involve helping an operator rethink their kitchen, while the next could be an entirely different challenge, including exciting work in the cruise ship industry. Every customer brings a unique set of needs, and figuring out the right solution is still one of his favorite parts of the job.

When he’s not working, you’ll often find Scott outdoors. He enjoys gardening with his son, fishing, golfing, and spending as much time outside with his family as he can.

Watching his children grow has been one of the most rewarding parts of his life. His daughter recently joined him at IFG, and it’s obvious how proud he is watching her grow professionally. Listening to him talk about her confidence, her ability to carry conversations, and how naturally she adapts, you can hear the pride in his voice.

Scott is always looking for opportunities to make someone else’s day a little easier. Whenever he hears that someone in his community is in a bind, he tries to find ways to help. This includes keeping a finger on the pulse of his employees; when he hears someone is struggling with something outside of work, he goes above and beyond to help them.

By the end of our conversation, one thing stood out more than anything else.

Scott measures success a little differently than many people.

It’s not about selling more equipment. It’s about helping customers make better decisions, building a team that genuinely supports one another, and never forgetting the people who helped you get where you are.

That mindset has shaped his career, earned the respect of his teammates and customers, and is exactly why he’s this month’s Shining Star.

KL: What separates reps who last in this industry from those who burn out?
SH: The relationships. Customers become partners when you focus on building trust instead of simply making a sale. And honestly, it helps when you genuinely love what you do. It’s hard to burn out when you’re passionate about helping people succeed.

KL: How do you build trust quickly with a new potential customer?
SH: Show them you’re looking out for their business, not just your own. Sometimes that means recommending a different solution or even sending them somewhere else if it’s truly the better fit. You might not win every sale, but customers remember honesty. When they know you’re putting their best interests first, the trust comes naturally.

KL: What’s one misconception you’ve heard about equipment financing?
SH: A lot of customers assume financing means paying more for the equipment but I encourage them to think about it differently. Financing preserves cash, and cash gives you options. It allows you to invest in your business, whether that’s hiring staff, making improvements, or having a cushion when unexpected expenses come up. That’s why I appreciate working with FS Foodservice Solutions. They do a great job helping customers understand their options so they can make the decision that’s right for their business.

KL: What’s something that still challenges you, even after years in the industry?
SH: The internet has changed how people buy equipment. It’s become easier than ever to compare prices online, and sometimes that overshadows the value a knowledgeable dealer brings. Helping customers understand the expertise, guidance, and long-term support that comes with working with the right partner is still one of the biggest challenges we face.

KL: How do you stay current with new products, technology, or menu trends?
SH: Never stop learning. The day you think you know everything is probably the day you should retire. I make time to meet with manufacturer reps, ask questions, and learn about new equipment because there’s always something new to discover. Those relationships are an incredible resource.

KL: What’s the hardest objection for you personally, and how do you handle it?
SH: Losing. Nobody likes to lose, but I always want to understand why. Was it price? Was it a better solution? Did we miss something? Every loss is an opportunity to learn, and that’s something I encourage my team to do as well. If you understand why you lost today, you’re much more likely to win the next opportunity.

As a thank you for being part of our Shining Star Series, we send each featured rep a gift card to a local restaurant of their choice. It’s our way of showing appreciation and supporting the local spots they love.

Scott will be using his gift card at Cousin Vinny’s. Scott loves that they started with a dream, and have now expanded into a local treasure! Their food is so killer that they’re even slotted to appear on an upcoming episode of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.
